Hsinchu, Taiwan, 14 January 2003 : Zinwell won a completed quantity of Digital Satellite STB bid from SECRETARIA DE EDUCACION PUBLICA of Mexico!
Pushing Taiwan's greatest STB design to the international stage.

Education Department of Mexico (SECRETARIA DE EDUCACION PUBLICA, as SEP) in Central America opened the international bid for "construction of digital satellite education system engineering", Zinwell's STB is widely favored by members of the Education Department and end customers, the only STB qualified for the whole volume supply, total 32,000 units in the first stage.

The first 10,000 units have been approved for product delivery by three sub director de SEP and the end customer during their visit to Zinwell in December 2002, the following 20,000 more units are arranged for deliveries by the end of February 2003.

According to the Chief secretary of this project, some schools are chosen for the deployment of the 30,000 more STBs in the first stage, expecting a continuous deployment to other schools in the coming three years, demand followed by is about 120,000 units. Zinwell is confident to get ahead in this business winning all bids afterwards.

Sun TV (India) Indicates the level of Commitment of Zinwell

Sun TV (India) Indicates the level of Commitment of Zinwell's STBs

Hsinchu, Taiwan, 11 October 2002 : SCV, the cable network division of Sun TV Group, is gearing-up to offer broadband services like high-speed Internet and video-on-demand as soon as CAS (conditional access system) is made mandatory by the government.

The MSO (multi-system operator) is planning to kick off its pilot with a one-way digital service in Chennai to study the technical feasibility of broadband pay TV on the conditional access systems (or digital set-top boxes) it is importing from Taiwan Zinwell. We have already received 3,000 set-top boxes from Taiwan and hope to test-launch by September with services like high-speed Internet, video-on-demand, railway and flight information, etc, Mr Kalanithi Maran, chairman and managing director of Sun Network told eFE. Each box, custom-designed to Sun requirements, is priced at Rs 10,000, he said.

The company is now waiting for the head-end equipment at the MSO-end, priced around Rs 3.5 crore, to be shipped from Zinwell, a Taiwanese company, to start its pilot study. The pilot project is expected to run for one or two months before commercial launch. This is dependent on the CAS regulation, that will make it mandatory for cable operators to stop transmission of pay channels in their basic package.

The current Internet tariff offered by the cable network varies from Rs 1000 per month to Rs 18,000 per month for speeds ranging from 64 mbps to 256 mbps. The MSO had started offering Internet through cable from November 2001 and, at present has around 300 internet customers, 75 per cent of whom are corporate. The company is however offering a one-way digital service, which means that if a customer wants a particular video/movie to be played at a particular time, he can!|t directly key-in to the system, but has to communicate by other means like a telephone.

However, the existing TV sets which are all analogue-based are adequate for receiving these services. Once the volume picks-up, Sun will look at assembling the set-top boxes itself in India, according to Mr Maran. As the CAS imports attract a duty of around 53 per cent, assembling locally will bring down the cost considerably, which we plan to pass on to the end-consumer for better penetration” he said.

Sun Open To Joining DTH Platform

New Delhi: The Kalanidhi Maran controlled Sun Network, which owns a bouquet of nine regional language channels, is open to the idea of joining the Direct-to-Home (DTH) platform, but has not made an application for it yet. This assumes significance as there!|s talk of a third broadcaster applying for DTH, after Star-backed Space TV and the Zee group made their application.

According to a senior official of the Sun network, there are some problem areas for broadcasters in the DTH norms such as the 20 per cent sectoral cap. So, for now the South-based network has adopted a wait and watch policy. However, it is indicated that Sun is interested in DTH like other major broadcasters. The official said:The official said: " We ' re open to any new technology, whether that is DTH or CAS. "
